“Every time we get one of these storms we learn about what customers are looking for and what the best products to serve their needs are, not just during the storm, but after as well,” says Pump Express Sales Manager Fred Hettinger.

Many homeowners who would have put off installing battery back-up pumps in their basements prior to the flooding caused by Hurricane Irene last year took the plunge in the aftermath and were on point for Sandy.

“Before the storm we sold a lot of deep cycle batteries for battery back-up pumps,” says Hettinger. “We typically increase our stock of these items in the spring and fall so we were able to meet customer demand.”

Power outages across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have raised the profile of battery-powered backup pumps and water-powered back-up pumps are gaining popularity in areas with municipal water supplies. Pump Express is adding BJM’s new single-phase, high temperature pumps to its catalog. The new pumps mark the addition of a small commercial grade model to BJM’s Fahrenheit (F-Series) line, designed to operate in liquids too hot for conventionally built submersible pumps (140-200°F). The single phase model rounds out BJM’s extensive line of high temperature pumps.

“Three years ago we came up with a high temperature, three phase pump that has taken off very nicely for us,” says Jay Gallagher, BJM’s Regional Sales Manger. “Since then we’ve been getting requests for the same pump in a single phase model from people who use steam in their heating. The single phase line is suitable for smaller applications like apartment buildings and college campus (dormitories) requiring pumps with 120 and 220 voltage. There weren’t any scrambled eggs but there was plenty of fine slurry at the end of the great Liberty Pump Breakfast & Learn event at Pump Express headquarters last week. Local contractors joined Pump Express staff to get acquainted with Liberty’s line of sump, sewage and effluent pumps and to enjoy some early-morning shop talk about pump applications and problems encountered in the field.

Liberty Pumps‘ Steve Ritsema presented his company’s ground and wastewater products, fielding questions pertaining to commercial and residential applications. Liberty’s grinder pumps were in the spotlight.

“Plumbers told us when we were designing a grinder pump to make sure that it’ll eat nylon stockings. That’s a service call all the time. Nylon stockings are very tough, stretchy and will jam a pump up every time.”
